Newly-elected Episcopal Bishop V. Gene Robinson did not set out to cause a firestorm, nor did he intend to reform the Episcopal Church. He simply wanted to serve his God and his parishioners, and was unwilling to do so under an assumed identity. Through this simple act of self-assertion, Robinson has now become the first openly gay, non-celibate man to be elected bishop of any Christian denomination in the 2,000-year history of Christianity.

Robinson came into this world weak and was not expected to live. On the recommendation of the attending obstetrician, his father signed his birth and death certificates simultaneously. Robinson didn’t expect to be gay, either. He married, had two children, and took counseling to “be normal” before finally accepting his ineluctable gayness. There’s an awesome strength inside this man, having so thoroughly accepted himself.
