Information
Annual ingress of the sun, calculated for
Baghdad, Iraq.
The Iraq war began on March 19,
2003. In early March 2007, as we approach the 4th
anniversary of the war’s inception, President George W. Bush is sending
additional troops to Iraq to gain control of the situation. It seems
that, with each report of violence or death, another round of criticism
is launched against Bush’s foreign policies, strategies, and
leadership. Increasing numbers of analysts, politicians, and reporters
are describing the situation in Iraq as a civil war and are calling for
the withdrawal of US troops. We thought it would be interesting this
week to focus the discussion on Iraq to determine, if we can, what the
next few months hold for that war-torn country.

What Do You Think?
The war in Iraq began four years ago, on March 19, 2003, with the US
pre-emptive launch of missiles. This week we thought it would be instructive
to study the 2007 Aries ingress chart with a focus on Iraq. Perhaps we can
forecast what the next few months hold for the people of this war-torn
country.
If you are new to mundane astrology or to astrological studies in general
and want some ideas about how to read a mundane chart, you can follow this
link: (http://www.astrodatabank.com/NM/AriesIngress2006.htm)
for some guidelines accompanying last year’s ingress chart. Since hindsight
is a valuable learning tool, it might be useful to review that 2006 ingress
chart calculated for Washington, DC as well as the chart of the war’s
“birth” and the events that have transpired since then. The war inception
chart can be found at
http://www.astrodatabank.com/NM/IraqWar.htm.
The following questions are meant to guide the discussion of a complex and
horrific situation. They are meant as well to enrich our knowledge of
mundane astrology. Feel free to answer any or all, to pose new questions or
to share techniques or astrological insights about this chart in particular
or mundane astrology in general.
- Note the 3rd house position of the sun in this equal house system chart,
calculated for Baghdad. What might that placement tell us about the
situation in Iraq? In some unequal house systems like Placidus or Koch, the
sun falls into the second house. If you use whole signs (with 0° Capricorn
on the ASC and 0° of each succeeding sign on each of the following house
cusps), the sun would be in the 4th house. Is it possible to synthesize
interpretations of the sun with these different house placements in mind?
Does such a synthesis enrich our interpretation or confuse it?
- Where in the chart might you look for a determination of whether the war
in Iraq will continue as is, intensify, or abate in the next few months?
What in the chart might indicate whether the Iraqi police and military are
strong enough to establish and maintain some semblance of law and order?
- In general we might use the moon’s position to signify the populace and
we might want to examine the first house and its ruler for clues to the
general state of the country. What do the ASC, its ruler, the first house
and the moon tell us about the situation there? What factors in the chart
show whether Iraqis can expect some relief, continuation of the status quo
or further deterioration of living conditions in their country?
- The 10th house and its ruler are often used in mundane charts to
represent the leader of the country. What do the Scorpio MC in the 10th
equal house, along with the positions of its ruler(s) tell us about Prime
Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s leadership style, skills, and fitness to lead
during these severely troubled times? Every leader needs supporters and
allies. Where in the chart might you look to determine the strength and
support he receives or lack thereof? What in the chart describes his
challenges?
- Where is the US represented in the chart? Can you forecast from this
chart what the US is likely to do in the next few months?
