Biography
American actor and noted family, the son of independent filmmaker
Robert Downey, Sr., from whom he learned much about acting and drugs. His
first screen appearance was 1970; he was nominated for an Oscar for
"Chaplin" in 1992. He married model Deborah Falconer, with a son
(Indio) born in September 1993. They separated in 1996.
Downey was arrested on drug related charges for the third time in less
than a month on 7/20/96. He was sentenced to three years probation and
public service after three months live-in rehab. Seemingly bent on
self-destruction of a fine talent, if not his well-being, he moved in and
out of arrests and rehab for the next two years. On 12/08/1997 he was
returned to jail for violating probation by failing to stay clean and
sober.
On 2/13/1998, he suffered a slight cut on his nose after fighting with
another inmate, and was transferred to another jail in Monterey Park, CA.
He then entered an undisclosed rehab center for a 67-day stay. Upon
serving his time, Downey returned to the screen with skilled performances.
Things took a turn for the worse when, on 6/22/1999, Downey was sentenced
to a stint in the L.A. County Jail's rehab center after confessing in
court that he had violated his probation. On 8/05/1999, his plight
worsened even further when he was sentenced to two years in prison after
revealing that rehab didn't work, and that he just couldn't kick his
habit. In an interview in January 1999, he came out with his bi-sexuality.
Psychiatrist Manijeh Mikakhtar has diagnosed Downey Jr. with bipolar
disorder, also known as manic depression. She concurs that his drug use
has been "self-medicating," and that he needs treatment, not
punishment.
In 2000, Downey completed his incarceration and returned to the small
screen with five episodes on the series "Ally McBeal,"
October-November. He seemed to be back on track until an anonymous caller
led police to a motel room in Palm Springs, CA on 11/25/2000, 9:00 PM.
Sadly, Downey was found to be under the influence of a controlled
substance and he was arrested for committing a felony. Released 11/26/2000
on $15,000 bail, he is scheduled to appear in court within 30 days.
People who know him have claimed that good fortune is a contributing
factor to his recent drug-related arrests. Downey Jr. is reputed to have
trouble accepting the fact that he's rich, famous, and has a natural
acting talent, while those around him suffer. Downey says of his
addiction, "(it is) like I've got a shotgun in my mouth, with my
finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal." He
credits his wife and ex-girlfriend Sara Jessica Parker as being the most
helpful in keeping him straight. Yet so far the consequences of addiction
do not seem to have had a life-changing impact on Downey.
