Biography
American politician. Kucinich was elected to the Cleveland City council at age 23. In 1977,
at age 31, he was elected mayor of Cleveland, at the time the youngest person to be elected head
of a major U.S. city. He lost his re-election bid in 1979 when the banks in Cleveland forced
the city to default on its loans after Kucinich refused, on principle, to sell the city's
municipally-owned electric company to a private competitor.
Fifteen years later, in 1992, he re-entered politics, running for a seat in the Ohio Senate.
The “crazy” stance he took against selling the electric company had turned out in hindsight to
be a smart move. Taking the light bulb as the symbol for his Senate campaign, he won the election.
In 1998, the Cleveland City Council honored him for his "courage and foresight" in not selling
the electric system. In 1996, he won his bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives
with a promise to "light up Congress." Chair of the House’s Progressive Caucus, he announced
his candidacy for the Democratic presidential primary on February 17, 2003. His grassroots
campaign is established on the progressive principles which he holds dear. Considered a dark
horse by many political analysts, Kucinich doesn’t appear to be fazed by his positioning. Rather,
volunteers passed out flyers at theaters showing the movie “Seabiscuit,” proclaiming
“Long shots do win!” He promises to make non-violence an “organizing principle” by establishing
a Department of Peace, to promote and fund universal health care and adequate education for all
and to safeguard the environment. Among his supporters are Ralph Nader and Willie Nelson.
The eldest of seven children, he and his family lived in 21 places by the time he was 17
years old, including, he remembers, a couple of cars. He graduated from Case Western Reserve
University with a BA and MA in 1973. Kucinich married Sandra Lee McCarthy on January 15, 1977
and they have one daughter; they divorced in August 1986. A vegetarian because he values the
sacredness of life, he says, "I live each day with a grateful heart and a desire to be of
service to humanity."

Quotes:
- "We have a duty to assert our human needs as a people and not to yield them
for the base concerns of an unresponsive government: We have a right to a job. We have a
right to decent housing. We have a right to health care. We have a right to food fit to
eat, air fit to breathe and water fit to drink. Peace is a civil right which makes other
human rights possible. Peace is the precondition for our existence. Peace permits our
continued existence."
- "Poverty is a weapon of mass destruction. Homelessness is a weapon of mass
destruction. Lack of adequate education is a weapon of mass destruction."

What Do You Think?
- What makes this guy willing to enter the world of politics - a
world which regularly dismisses and disdains heart- centered values?
- Can one read Progressive politics in a chart?
- If you were his campaign advisor, which aspects of his chart would
you counsel him to put to full use. Hint: he has four planets in
Scorpio, a stellium in the 7th, and a tight Saturn, Pluto, Mars
configuration.
