Biography
American tragedy, a terrorist attack of unprecedented magnitude in
which two aircraft crashed into the World Trade Center in the heart of New
York City. The planes, both hijacked craft, stuck the upper floors of the
two 110-story buildings at 8:46 AM and 9:02:20 AM. According to seismic
readings, the first of the twin buildings (the South Tower) collapsed at
9:59 AM and the North Tower shortly thereafter at 10:28 AM. Both planes
that crashed into the World Trade Center had been hijacked after takeoff
from Boston, a U.S. official said, citing a transmission from the plane.
''The plane was coming in low and ... it looked like it hit at a slight
angle,'' said Sean Murtagh, a CNN vice president, the network reported.
Heavy black smoke billowed into the sky above the gaping holes in the
side of the towers, one of New York City's most famous landmarks, and
debris rained down upon the street, one of the city's busiest work areas.
When the second plane hit, a fireball of flame and smoke erupted, leaving
a huge hole in the glass and steel tower. People ran down the stairs in
panic and fled the building. Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be
office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles away. There
are 50,000 people who work in the Trade Center and another 20,000 visit
there daily, along with tens of thousands in the periphery. These people
are all civilians, not connected with U.S. military, making this a
particularly heinous act of terrorism. No estimates of casualties are
available as yet.
At 9:45 AM, an aircraft crashed on a helicopter landing pad near the
Pentagon. A section of the building collapsed in the ensuing fire and
destruction. The West Wing of the White House was evacuated with the
immediate threat.
All planes were grounded across the country by the Federal Aviation
Administration. All bridges and tunnels into Manhattan were closed down.
Several subway lines were immediately shut down Tuesday. Trading on Wall
Street was suspended. The attack was compared to Pearl Harbor, a surprise
attack of war on 12/07/1941.
Terrorists made a former attack on the World Trade Center February 26,
1993, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000 others. In 1945, an
Army Air Corps B-25, a twin-engine bomber, crashed into the 79th floor of
the Empire State Building in dense fog.
