Linda Leaman, PhD, CAP, quotes seismologists at Columbia
University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory who report that their
seisomgraphs recorded the impacts of the airplanes at 8:46 a.m. and
9:03 a.m., and the tower collapse at 9:59 and 10:28 a.m. It appeared
Sunday 9/16 from the N.Y. Times News Service.
(Former various reports were for a few minutes more or less.)
From Diana K. Rosenberg, New York: The New York Times March 12 2002
published time corrections for the 9/11 WTC attacks, based on
information from Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty
Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY, 21 miles north of the city.
These times are based on seismographs of the Observatory, "with
calculations that take into account the 17 seconds it takes a seismic
wave to travel to Palisades, said seismological researcher Dr
Won-Young Kim." It is calculated that the time could be off by 2 or 3
seconds, but no more.
The north tower was hit at 8:46:26 AM ("about 2 minutes earlier
than has been widely and incorrectly reported by the NY Times and
others"); the 2nd plane hit the south tower at 9:02:54 AM. The south
tower collapsed at 9:59:04, or 56 minutes after impact, the north
tower fell at 10:28:31, or 102 minutes after it was struck.
Since we're being Virgoan here, I checked Maporama.com, which gave
coordinates of 40N42:41, 74W00:45, which sounds right, as the ACS
Atlas gives Wall St as 40N42, 74W01. Love, Diana.

Biography
A terrorist attack of unprecedented magnitude occurred in which two
aircraft crashed into the World Trade Center in the heart of New York
City, American Airlines Flight 11 (08:46 AM) and United Airlines Flight
175 (09:03 AM). The planes, both hijacked craft, stuck the upper floors of
the two 110-story buildings. The first of the twin buildings collapsed at
9:59 AM and the second shortly after, at 10:29 AM.
Heavy black smoke billowed into the sky above the gaping holes in the
side of the towers, one of New York City's most famous landmarks, and
debris rained down upon the street, one of the city's busiest work areas.
When the second plane hit, a fireball of flame and smoke erupted, leaving
a huge hole in the glass and steel tower. People ran down the stairs in
panic and fled the building. There are 50,000 people who work in the Trade
Center and another 30,000 visit there daily, along with tens of thousands
in the periphery. These people are all civilians, not connected with U.S.
military, making this a particularly heinous act of terrorism.
Within the following hour, at 9:45 AM, an aircraft crashed on a
helicopter-landing pad near the Pentagon, United Flight 77, and the West
Wing of the White House was evacuated at the immediate threat. A fourth
hijacked plane, American Airlines Flight 93, crashed in the Pennsylvania
countryside.
All planes were grounded across the country by the Federal Aviation
Administration. All bridges and tunnels into Manhattan were closed down.
Several subway lines were immediately shut down Tuesday. Trading on Wall
Street was suspended. The attack was compared to Pearl Harbor, a surprise
attack of war on 12/07/1941.

Ogonowski and flight attendant Betty Ong when Gov. Jane Swift
presented the Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery.
Ogonowski had opened the microphone that allowed air traffic
controllers to know what was happening in the cockpit.
