Chapter 1: General Characteristics
Your fundamental needs, values, and orientation towards life are symbolized by the four astrological elements. Each person has their own unique balance of these four basic energies: fire (warmth, inspiration, enthusiasm), earth (practicality, realism, material interests), air (social and intellectual qualities), and water (emotional needs and feelings).
Your "elemental make-up" is described below. Remember that most people are "unbalanced" or lopsided, and if you are lacking or deficient in a certain element (or elements), it simply means that you need to consciously develop that aspect of yourself to learn to appreciate and/or to work harder in that dimension of life.
Sometimes we overvalue the element that we are least endowed with, sensing it as a lack within ourselves, but more often we neglect or ignore it. The qualities described below will be reiterated and explained in more detail in the following chapters.
Finding your life's work - a concrete means of self-expression - and discovering your place in the world is one of your fundamental challenges. You tend to feel out of place in the world, with no solid sense of security. You often live in the private world of your imagination and though you may have a very rich inner life, you tend not to actualize or do anything productive with it. The more prosaic, material side of life either baffles or disinterests you, yet you need to develop that aspect of yourself.
Constancy, patience, and practicality are qualities you need to cultivate.
Your outward manner, which as we shall see in the next chapter, is rather light, intelligent and reasonable, can be very deceiving since, overall, you are quite an emotional, deeply feeling, often irrational person.

Chapter 2: How You Approach Life and How You Appear To Others
The following is a description of your basic stance towards life, the way others see you, the way you come across, the face you show to the world. In Chapter 3 you will read about the "The Inner You: Your Real Motivation", which describes the kind of person you are at heart and where your true priorities lie. Read this chapter and the next one and compare them - there may be significant differences between them, in which case "the inner you" may not shine through and others are in for some surprises when they get to know you at a more than superficial level. This chapter describes the costume you wear, your role in life, while Chapter 3 talks about the real person inside the costume.
You are always questioning and learning, and you seem young and alive no matter what your chronological age, for your mind is always alert, curious, flexible and open to new experiences. You have a childlike enthusiasm for anything new and you learn easily, but you also get bored rather quickly. You can be something of a scatterbrain, for you tend to have so many ideas and irons in the fire that it is hard to keep track of them all. You need and crave variety, change, mental stimulation, and an active social life.
Articulate, clever, often funny and witty, you are always a refreshing and interesting conversationalist. You enjoy meeting and interacting with a variety of different people. You are friendly, flirtatious, and charming in a light, playful way, and no matter how badly you may be feeling, you never appear heavy or somber. You may seem frivolous to other, more serious souls. You have a sense of humor and a sense of perspective that prevents you from taking yourself or life too seriously. In fact, you may seem flippant or unconcerned about matters that others consider very important.
In general, you respond to life mentally and objectively rather than emotionally, and you may not empathize with people very much. You do not like to be weighed down with too much responsibility or with others' emotional burdens. Chapter 3: The Inner You: Your Real Motivation
Although you express yourself in a light, friendly, open manner (as mentioned in the previous chapter), you are at heart much more emotionally complex and intense than you appear. You harbor deeper feelings and a much "darker" side than is first apparent. You may be torn at times between keeping things light and playful versus exploring your own and others' emotional depths. However, your light airy side and your deep, mysterious side can balance one another: you can verbalize, reflect upon, and consciously understand, explain, and elucidate your deepest feelings. You are a natural researcher and you probably love mystery stories. Your sense of humor can be your saving grace when you are getting too heavy and serious.
Quiet, deep, emotionally complex and intensely private, you are not a person who is easy to get to know and understand. You are extremely sensitive but disinclined to show it, and you allow only a special few into your inner world. Like a wary animal, you are cautious and mistrustful of those you do not know until you "sniff them out". You are very, very instinctive and intuitive. You usually have a strong, immediate gut reaction to people, even though you may be unable to clearly articulate why you feel as you do. Your feelings and perceptions go deeper than words.
You also have a powerful need for deep emotional involvement and you form very intense love bonds and attachments. You have good mental concentration and the ability to become completely immersed in your work. You seem to know things at an instinctive, nonverbal level and prefer learning through direct experience or apprenticeship rather than vicariously via books or lectures. You have mechanical ability and work well with your hands. You could become adept at sculpture, pottery, carpentry, stained glass, or anything that involves doing and making things manually. Biology (and related fields such as medicine) interests you as well. You also have an instinctive rapport with animals, and may feel you relate better to them than to people! Chapter 5: Emotions: Moods, Feelings, Romance
You respond very much to the emotional tone and atmosphere around you, and can be dominated by your fluctuating and unpredictable moods. You often appear irrational to others because you cannot always explain the reason or source of your feelings. Anyone who lives with you must accept your ups and downs and appreciate your need for times of withdrawal.
You are also very sympathetic and understand the unspoken feelings and needs of others. You take slights and rebuffs very personally and though you may forgive a transgression by a friend or loved one, you never forget it.
You are likely to be a great collector of things - a real pack rat in fact - for your belongings give you a sense of security and continuity with the past, which is important to you. Antiques or things with sentimental value from your past are especially dear to you.

Chapter 6: Drive and Ambition: How You Achieve Your Goals
You are aspiring, enterprising, and forever following some bright and distant star, planning some new venture or investigating new potentials. You are definitely "upwardly mobile" in either a material or spiritual sense (or both). You aim high and are not content simply with a quiet, secure existence. You like to stretch your limits, to see how far you can go, and to take risks. You are a positive thinker, expect success for yourself, and are philosophical about failures. You are flexible and bounce back from disappointment rather quickly, usually with another hopeful new idea you want to try. Your enthusiasm and confidence are contagious and enable you to enlist the aid and support you need for your projects. However, you sometimes promise more than you can actually achieve, because you are overly optimistic or pay insufficient attention to the practicalities involved.
You also tend to get distracted and to have too many things going at once. Your strength lies in your ability to be innovative, open to new progressive concepts, willing to experiment and to reject customs and traditions when they cease to serve any positive function in the present. Also, you have an expansive view of the world, one that includes humanity and not only your own small, personal circle.
Your career or contribution to the world at large is likely to touch many people's lives in a very positive, helpful way. You aim high and have an innate confidence and trust both in your own abilities and in life in general, which enables you to go far. You want to do something BIG with your life, and you attract the support you need to do so, for your aims are not solely for your own personal benefit. Chapter 8: Areas That Challenge You Or Are Difficult For You
You have a penchant for order and precision, and an almost compulsive attention to detail. You are often hypercritical and can be such a demanding perfectionist that you discourage yourself or others from even attempting something that won't be done exactly the way you know it should be done.
You frequently over analyze or pick things apart mentally. You may be something of a hypochondriac also. You must learn that you do not have to rationally understand everything in order for it to be valid, and also to relax your unnecessarily high or strict standards.
It may be difficult for you to play spontaneously or just let your hair down, for you tend to inhibit that side of yourself by being too self-conscious and concerned with the impression you are making.
You may work very hard at some sport or creative medium in order to excel, for you want very, very much to be noticed, acknowledged, and recognized as special in some way. Though you may indeed be outstanding, you also need to learn to relax and enjoy yourself more.
Your faith, optimism, and sense of possibilities are tempered by much caution, and often doubt or skepticism as well. Whatever hopes or visions you have for your life are firmly held in check by your sense of reality. At times you may wish for more freedom, but you also fear it and hang back. You may blame practical limitations or some external condition or the prevailing Authority for your own inhibitions.
Your ambition and desire for power could be somewhat out of proportion and you can be quite ruthless in dealing with obstacles and difficulties you may be faced with. You must learn to control your temper and be willing to compromise.
You have a tendency to be too critical of yourself. You may be plagued by feelings of guilt about some past events, leading to further self-doubt. You must learn to handle your frustration, depression and discontentment and try to overcome your lack of self-confidence.
You are a bit skeptical, somewhat irritable, and others may think of you as quarrelsome or nagging. Your nervousness seems to stem from your tendency to over-work yourself, and you should try not to make more demands on others than they are able to handle.

Now we will discuss patterns of behavior which you instinctively and habitually revert to when under stress - a mostly unconscious process and one which you are apt to overdo because it is so familiar and thus easy for you. The direction you need to follow in order to develop balance, greater awareness, and wholeness is also described.
Cultivating the qualities of empathy, gentleness, and compassion will help counterbalance your deeply ingrained perfectionism and critical nature. When under stress, you are apt to try to rigorously analyze and to focus on what needs to be corrected or improved, and you can easily become problem-oriented, losing sight of the big picture and of what is working.
Learn to relax and surrender to the flow of events without having to figure everything out all the time. Let your feelings and intuitions flow more freely, be more flexible and fluid, use your imagination and let your dreams emerge!
The arena you are most likely to wrestle with these issues is in any involvements you have with teams, clubs, organizations, networks, and the like. The qualities described above need to be channeled into some sort of group effort or experience, or have some impact on society at large.
The specific habits which are likely to hold you back, or which you are prone to overdo, especially during stressful periods, include:
Rigid self-control which overly restricts your ability to freely express yourself or explore possibilities, excessive concern with work, duty and security, fearfulness, judgmental attitude towards self or other people, feeling alone and cut off from sources of nourishment outside of the self. Try to learn to relax and recognize that everything is not your responsibility.

Chapter 10: Generational Influences: Your Age Group
In this chapter we will discuss characteristics and traits of your generation. Of course, you may not share all of the characteristics of your generation, but you are greatly affected by the tone that is set by your generation.
The first topic is "The Subconscious and Emotional Drive of Your Age Group". In this section we will describe a deeply felt urge, even compulsion, of your age group. This deeply felt drive comes to the surface with great force and power, and consequently leaves in its wake considerable upheaval and change. The second topic is "The Ideals and Illusions of Your Age Group", that describes the dreams, fantasies, and spiritual aspirations of your age group. The third and last topic is "What is New and Different in Your Age Group", which describes areas in which your age group tends to be innovative, inventive, unusual, and also where it may be unstable and unreliable.
The characteristics described below may affect a group of people for anywhere from a few years to about 30 years. There are one or more different astrological factors described in each of the three sections below.
The Subconscious and Emotional Drive of Your Age Group
You are part of a 20 year period that is often referred to as the "ME" generation, a generation that has a very proud and self-reliant attitude. You are a generation that is very concerned with self-development and personal integrity. Women's rights and minority rights are issues that your generation has fostered and they reflect your concern with individual respect, integrity, and honor. Your age group has a deeply felt sense that each person has an equal right and opportunity to fully develop his or her inner potential.
However, your group also finds it difficult to be part of a team and a strong egotism makes group efforts difficult; you tend to see the individual as more important than the group. You also defy authority and often feel that no one has the right to tell you what to do. The strong movement to refuse drafting into the military is one example of your age group's strong sense of individual rights and freedom.

The entire generation to which you belong has tremendous opportunities for spiritual rebirth and awakening. This will not be forced upon you or precipitated by unavoidable events, rather it comes from an inner yearning and a natural propensity to seek the depths.
What is New and Different in Your Age Group
You are part of a 7 year group of people who have a strong need to feel unrestrained by family ties and personal heritage. Your age group tends to find personal relationships very restrictive, and also tends to feel alienated and distant from family ties and concerns. Forming long-term personal relationships is difficult for your age group, and divorce rates are high in your group. However, you are an emotional and sensitive group also, and this instability is painful at times. Finding personal freedom and closeness with others at the same time is a big challenge for you.
