AstroDatabank Newsmaker: Jerry Falwell

Jerry Falwell was arguably the father of modern televangelism. With his sharply fundamentalist views, preacher-talk, and strong biases, he convinced millions of people that his opinions were the only right ones. He is credited with unifying religious conservatives and strengthening their political bargaining power. The New York Times obituary, written by Peter Applebome (May 15, 2007) said: "He was at home in both the millennial world of fundamentalist Christianity and the earthly blood sport of the political arena." His death, at a young-ish 73, has been seen by some as a signal that the religious right is ending its sway over American politics. Whatever you may think of his views, his action, or his political influence, Falwell's life and his chart are definitely worthy of study!

What Do You Think?

1. Falwell's family history and his early life read like a biblical story. What astrological factors might indicate these experiences that surely must have been influential on Falwell's development?
2. Falwell was "born again" at a young age. He began his ministry by building a church for a few believers and soon expanded his empire to radio, TV, university and more. Where in the chart is the "born-again" evangelical? Where is the ability to turn religion into a business? And where is the political lobbyist, the person at home in both the religious sphere and the "blood sport of the political arena"?
3. How do you interpret Falwell's cardinal t-square, formed by an opposition of Mars to Uranus, both in square to Pluto? What role does this aspect pattern play in his personality, his development, his vocation and his rise to power?

1. The planets in her chart are all below the horizon. Yet, contrary to many cookbooks' definition of hemispheric emphasis, she has led quite a public life. How do you interpret this hemispheric emphasis and to what do you attribute the public eye in which she has led her life? To what do you attribute her periodic rises and falls in public favor?
2. Gifford is a writer, singer, song-writer, actress, TV show host, businessperson and fund-raiser for charities. To what astrological factors do you attribute so many endeavors? What in the chart indicates her alliances with older men who've helped her gain a great deal of publicity (her likeable and popular co-host Regis Philbin and her husband, noted football player and commentator Frank Gifford, are both over 20 years older than she is)?
3. She has quite a Leo stellium, and her Sun-Pluto conjunction acts as the midpoint of a sextile to Jupiter in Gemini on the one hand and to a Saturn-Neptune conjunction on the other. How would you interpret this pattern? Note that three of the four transpersonal planets form aspects to her Sun. What effect do these transpersonal planets have on her?
