Agnelli, Umberto

About 17 months after he took the helm at Fiat, Agnelli died of lymphoma late in the evening on May 27, 2004 at his home just on the outskirts of Turin, Italy.

Alfonso XIII, King of Spain

Steven Stuckey noticed a typographical error in his birth month. Alfonso was born in May, not July. His entry has been corrected.

On May 19, 2004, during his weekly half-hour appearance in the Commons, the Prime Minister was hit by two of several projectiles filled with purple powder that were hurled from an upper section of the gallery. The powder was later found to be harmless, and Scotland Yard arrested two men who were guests of Labour Party peer Baroness Golding. Baroness Golding apologized profusely for the incident, which took her by surprise. The dust descended at 12:18 BST according to BBC News, and Commons business was suspended for a little over one hour, recommencing at 1:30 PM BST.

Borbon, Prince Felipe de

His Highness, the Royal Prince of Asturias, Felipe de Borbón married television reporter Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano on the morning of May 22, 2004 in the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, Spain. The exchange of rings took place at 11:49:45 AM CEDT according to Isabella Orsini citing Italian television reports on RAI1. Felipe began dating her in late 2002, and they became engaged on November 1, 2003. Thanks to Steven Stuckey, we have corrected Felipe’s birth year to 1968; it was mis-typed in AstroDatabank as 1960.

Brunel, Isambard

Another update on his date of birth! Sy Scholfield has found a biography by L.T.C. Rolt, “Isambard Kingdom Brunel” Penguin Books, London, New York, 1989 (first published in 1957) which says on page 13: “The Brunels were still at Portsea in 1806 when Marc [Brunel] wrote in his journal: “’On the 9th of April, and at five minutes before one o’clock in the morning my dear Sophia was brought to bed of a boy.’ This was Isambard, his only son.” In the absence of a copy of his father’s diary, and with two conflicting times, we will have to downgrade the reliability of this birth information to DD.

Daley, Richard M.

Thanks to Ken Eardley, we have been alerted to the fact that the Chicago mayor’s birth year is incorrect in AstroDatabank v.3. He was born in 1942, not 1927.

Dash, Samuel

Dash died at age 79 of congestive heart failure in Washington, DC on May 29, 2004.

Davis, Geena

At age 47, the actress gave birth to twin boys on May 6, 2004 in Los Angeles. The boys’ names are Kian William and Kaiis Steven.

Biography: American military, England was among the soldiers who were photographed while they were allegedly torturing detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad, Iraq. In one of the photographs she is seen holding a leash around the neck of a prostrate naked man. England and other soldiers face the possibility of a court-martial for their deeds, which reportedly occurred in early 2004 but which didn't come to public attention until May 2004 when the troublesome photos were aired on television. In May 2004, England is five months pregnant. Her fiancé who is presumably the father of her baby, Spc. Charles Graner, is also implicated in the abuse scandal. England is insisting that her superiors in the prison were aware of the mistreatment of prisoners and condoned it. She says she was ordered to pose in some of the photos.

Gandhi, Sonia

Although she led the Indian National Congress to victory in India’s elections in spring 2004, she announced on May 18, 2004 in New Delhi, that she would “humbly decline” the Prime Minister’s position. Under pressure to reconsider her decision, she said, “I must follow my voice.” Earlier in the year, she said in an interview that her goal was to ensure that the Hindu nationalist-led government that held power prior to the May 2004 election was voted out. She added that her own power “is not a priority for me.”

Thanks to our readers, we have learned that among her personal effects being auctioned by Sotheby’s is a telegram announcing her birth. This telegram gives her birth time as 7:11 PM, different from the time given in AstroDatabank quoting from her birth certificate. Both times yield a Scorpio Ascendant. So far we have been unable to confirm her birth certificate time with the Hartford Vital Records office. Therefore we have updated her source notes as follows:

Kraum quotes B.C. on file in Hartford AA, 3/1940. Howard Hammitt Jr. called LMR to report that he was the one who had looked up Hepburn's B.C. for Kraum (For years, her date was given out as 11/08/1907, an error that she perpetuated up to the time of her autobiography, "Me, Stories of My Life," Knopf, 1991, when she admitted that she had lied about her birthdate. The date of November 8 was the birthdate of her brother Tom, who had hanged himself from the rafters at 16. She was 14 and found him, a great trauma. Biography: Christopher Andersen, "Young Kate," 1988.

PT adds in May 2004: Sotheby's catalog shows some of the personal effects the auction house is selling in June 2004. Among the items is an announcement of her birth sent in a telegram from M. Hepbourn [sic] to F. L. Garlinghouse on May 12, 1907 (note the spelling of her name): “Catherine Houghton Hepbourn, second, came at seven elevin [sic] tonight, Eight half pounds, all well.” PT notes that Garlinghouse was the maiden name of Kate’s maternal grandmother; we do not know who M. Hepbourn is; it’s unlikely to be her father since Kate in her autobiography, “Me,” gives her father’s name as Thomas Norval Hepburn.

Hunt, Helen

The actress gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Makena Lei Gordon Carnahan, on May 13, 2004 in Los Angeles. The baby’s father is writer-producer Matthew Carnahan whom Hunt has been dating since June 2001.

Kerry, Alexandra

The daughter of Presidential-hopeful John Kerry directed a 12-minute film which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2004. Alexandra appeared at the festival in a see-through black dress, eliciting comments from those who contrasted her style with her Dad’s often-stiff demeanor.

Moore, Robert

Bob Marks noticed a discrepancy between Moore’s birth place and the coordinates given in AstroDatabank. We had listed Chicago as his birth place but had given the coordinates of San Francisco. We have corrected the entry to reflect the fact that Moore was indeed born in San Francisco, CA. If you are manually changing this entry in AstroDatabank versions 1 or 2, please note that this is the record for Robert Moore, not Robert L. Moore.

Reagan, Ronald (click here for newsmaker page)

The extensive source notes have been updated to include the following:

A source close to the former president and Mrs. Reagan wrote to PT in April 2004 via e-mail: “President Reagan had stated that his mother’s water broke late afternoon, at home. His father went to get a midwife to help with the birth. President Reagan said he arrived a little later. It is known that his mother had a difficult labor. I have been working his chart for years as a Leo rising sign at 13° 10, and the chart works with all events known to me in his life. His chart was set for 5:51 PM.” The source, who wishes to remain anonymous, further states that, according to Nancy Reagan, Patty Reagan could not have known the time and was simply giving the same information that the author of “Dutch” gave in his book, a time that Mrs. Reagan felt was wrong.
