Agassi, Andre
Agassi bade a tearful farewell to competitive tennis after he lost his
21st consecutive tournament, the US Open, on September 3, 2006.
Celestial: Pluto Discovery
We have updated the write-up about its discovery to include the August 24, 2006
decision by a group of astronomers meeting at a Prague session of the International
Astronomical Union to declassify Pluto as a planet and to assign it to a new category
of dwarf planets.
Fallaci, Oriana
Called the "tigress of the typewriter," the Italian journalist succumbed to
breast cancer on September 15, 2006 in Florence, Italy. She was 76.
Ford, Glenn
The actor died August 29, 2006 at his Los Angeles home. He was 90 years old.
Grass, Gunther
In advance of his memoir's release, the noted German novelist confessed
in an August 2006 interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper that he
had never until now told the truth about his military service under the
Nazi regime. He said that his autobiography, "Peeling the Onion," reveals
that he volunteered for service and was not unwillingly conscripted as a
youth. His secret…"was a weight on me. My silence over all these years is
one of the reasons I wrote the book. It had to come out finally."
Hargitay, Mickey
On September 14, 2006, the former Mr. Universe died at age 80 in Los Angeles
of bone marrow cancer. Hargitay is the father of Mariska Hargitay, and we've
updated her record as well as his.
Kennedy, Ted
The Senator's sister, Patricia Kennedy Lawford, died of pneumonia on
September 17, 2006 at her home in Southampton, NY.
Kiko, Princess
The Japanese princess gave birth to a baby boy on September 6, 2006 at
8:27 AM local time in Tokyo. She had been admitted to the hospital on August
16th for complications and remained there until after the birth of her baby
who was later named Prince Hisahito.
Mathias, Robert
The two-time Olympic gold medalist and politician died of cancer at age
75 in Fresno, CA on September 2, 2006.
Pope Benedict XVI
Pope Benedict inflamed many Muslims by comments made in a speech against
religious violence delivered in Regensburg, Germany on September 12, 2006. In
the talk, Benedict quoted a Christian Byzantine emperor who wrote "Show me just
what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and
inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
Richards, Ann
The former Governor of Texas died at her Austin home of esophageal cancer
on September 13, 2006, soon after her 73rd birthday.
Smith, Anna Nicole
On September 10, 2006 three days after giving birth in the Bahamas to a
baby girl, Smith's 20-year old son Daniel died suddenly. He had gone to the
islands to be with his mom and his new baby sister. News reports said Smith
woke at 9:38 AM that morning, noticed her son wasn't breathing and screamed
for help. Daniel was pronounced dead at 10:05 AM. The cause is as yet unknown,
and the case was taken under investigation. Daniel Wayne Smith was born on
January 22, 1986 according to general media sources.
Spears, Britney
Spears gave birth to her second child, a son named Sutton Pierce Federline,
on September 12, 2006 in Los Angeles. According to an Associated Press report
citing an Us Weekly online article, the child was born "around 2 a.m. at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Stone, Sharon
The actress filed to adopt her third child and third boy in June 2006 and
confirmed the adoption in late August. The child is named Quinn Kelly Stone.
