The astrologer died on February 20, 2008 at 7:30 PM in New York, age 81.
Bruni, Carla
According to the Washington Post and other news outlets, the
supermodel-singer married France’s President Nicholas Sarkosy on
February 2, 2008 at the Elysée palace. The Guardian reported that the
ceremony began at 11 AM local time in Paris. The couple met at a party
in November 14, 2007, about a month after Sarkozy’s October divorce from
his second wife. Earlier unconfirmed reports (e.g., in the Telegraph)
gave January 16, 2008 as the date of a secret marriage.
Buckley, William
Buckley died on February 27, 2008 at his home in Stamford, CT. The
82-year old had been suffering from diabetes and emphysema.
Burke, Delta
The
actress checked into a clinic on February 6, 2008, reportedly seeking
help with an obsessive compulsive disorder and “hoarding.” She has
acknowledged in the past that she suffers from depression.
Castro, Fidel
On
February 19, 2008, the ailing leader of Cuba announced that he was
stepping down from power. On February 24, 2008, the Cuban National
Assembly selected Fidel’s brother Raul Castro as President.
Christie, Julie
She
married her boyfriend of nearly 30 years, Duncan Brown, in India in late
2007.
Clijsters, Kim
Clijsters and her husband, Brian Lynch,
welcomed their daughter Jada, born February 27, 2008 at 1:35 PM local
time in Tongeren, Belgium. Thanks to Sarah Van Sanden for the update.
Fossett, Steve
On
February 15, 2008, a judge declared the adventurer’s death official.
Moore, Robin
Moore died on February 19, 2008 in
southwestern Kentucky. The 82-year-old author had been ill for a long
while but the cause of death was unspecified.
Musharraf,
Pervez
In
the aftermath of the death of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto,
Musharraf’s party lost the elections held on February 18, 2008 in
Pakistan. Musharraf said he would not resign, vowing to work with the
new Parliament.
Nader,
Ralph
On
February 24, 2008 in an appearance on “Meet the Press” Nader announced
his candidacy for U.S. President. The announcement was broadcast at
10:34 AM EST (observed time).
Robbe-Grillet, Alain
The
writer/film maker died on
February 18, 2008 at age 85 in a Caen, France hospital. He had been
hospitalized a few days earlier for a cardiac problem.
Romney, Mitt
Romney suspended his campaign for the White House on February 7, 2008
and subsequently endorsed his rival for the Republican Party nomination,
John McCain.
Schumann, Robert
Many
Thanks to Shelley Jordan for finding information which allows us to
raise the Rodden rating on Schumann’s record to AA, citing church
records as given by the Director of the Robert Schumann House in Zwickau.
Space: Challenger Disaster
The
liftoff time was changed to 11:38 AM consistent with NASA’s
documentation. Thanks to Kanak Bosmia for the alert.
Whitney, Phyllis
The
prolific author died of pneumonia on February 8, 2008 in Faber, VA. She
was 104.
